The optional study of Languages Other Than English in the K–6 curriculum is located in the Key Learning Area of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE). The general aim is to develop in students the knowledge and understandings, skills, attitudes and values that enhance their sense of personal, community, national and global identity and enable them to participate effectively in maintaining or improving the quality of their society and their environment.

At Queanbeyan DEC this is achieved through the optional study of Indonesian provided by a specialist teacher.
