Recognising Harmony Week

Ghostbusters logo

Last Wednesday, our student leaders hosted our Term 1 whole-school assembly in recognition of Harmony Week.

Harmony Week is a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. The focus is on inclusiveness, respect and creating a sense of belonging for everyone. Our assembly was in recognition and celebration of our diverse student population, providing an opportunity where we could learn from one another and share our backgrounds in a safe environment.

We learned new ways to say ‘Hello’ and ‘Goodbye’ from our LOTE staff at Finigan SDE, as well as greetings that have variations of formality across Japanese, German, Italian, French, Serbian and Ngunnawal communities. It was lovely to hear phrases that are used in some of our households and families, as well as hearing from students who are studying languages and are already very curious about other cultures across the world too.

Our ‘Guess the Flag’ was a hotly contested competition! It became very clear that our students can recognize flags from across the world within 0.5 seconds, rather than the original 15 seconds that was allocated for the activity. We had Zach and Juliet take out the winner titles, with Angel and Myles closely following. Little did Myles (Year 6) know that he was taking on a Year 12 student in this competition! These assemblies continue to provide a great chance for our students to come together in the one online space at the one-time across all year groups, to share in the values of our school and to learn about the world around us at the same time. We look forward to seeing you all online again in Term 2 – watch this space!

District Arts Festival

District Arts Fesitval

Thank you to everyone who has put up their hand to be a performer for the District Arts Festival. Look out for an email with more information soon.

We are now on the hunt for students who would like to be in the STAGE CREW. This will involve being at the Canberra Theatre for the shows and rehearsals and helping backstage as well as moving props on and off the stage. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be involved in a theatre production!

Dates for the Festival are 12th – 14th August. More information about accommodation options will be released soon.

Please email deborah.degraaf@det.nsw.edu.au if you are interested in being in the stage crew.
